North American backyard bird count planned

It is time again for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). The 12th annual event is planned for February 13-16. Tens of thousands of bird watchers are expected to participate in this North American event project sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the national Audubon Society.  See the Jan. 22 edition of the Optic-Herald for more details.

Millers are featured performers in “Music of the Masters” concert

Millers are featured performers  in “Music of the Masters” concertMount Vernon Music Association invites the public to attend “Music of the Masters,” a concert featuring the musical compositions of Beethoven and Brahms at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, in The Music Hall. Performing will be Mount Vernon Music Players Steven Harlos, piano, Mark Miller violin, Ute Miller, viola and Carol Harlos, cello.

Hicks elected as president of historical association

B. F. Hicks was elected president of the Franklin County Historical Association for 2009 at the annual membership meeting at the Old Church Inn Monday, Jan. 5. See the Jan. 22 edition of the Optic-Herald for more details.

Annual arts alliance meeting planned

Members of the Franklin County Arts Alliance will enjoy live entertainment and view a varied media art show as a part of their annual meeting. The annual meeting is set for 6:30 p.m.Tuesday, Jan. 13.  A display of photographic work by artist David Stinson will be up for viewing.

Strange couple to head Arts Alliance

Strange couple to head Arts AllianceGary and Beverly Strange were elected to lead the Franklin County Arts Alliance as copresidents for 2009. The couple pledged to continue the momentum of the group in presenting programs, classes and exhibits for the membership and community.

FCAA sets annual meeting

The Franklin County Arts Alliance annual meeting for members is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13.  The evening will start off with a potluck supper at the Cultural Arts Center. See the full story in the 12-25 edition of the Optic-Herald.

Kennedy wins coloring contest

First place winner in the Optic-Herald Coloring Contest by Jillian Kennedy.Jillian Lynn Kennedy, age nine of Mount Vernon, was the winner of the Optic-Herald Coloring Contest. The theme for this year’s contest was “Santa’s Toyland.”
