Direct access to 911 law now in effect

Ark-Tex Council of Governments is notifying business owners about Kari’s Law requiring owners of multi-line telephone systems (MLTS) in Texas to provide direct-dial access to 9-1-1 without having to dial an additional digit such as 9 first before getting an outside line.

Benefit fish-fry Saturday

The United Way of Franklin County will provide an all-you-can-eat catfish dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge on Saturday, September 3 to kick-off the annual pledge drive for the local organization. For more about this event, see the September 1 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.

Plan a sober ride for Labor Day

As celebrations are planned  to mark the last days of summer, the Texas Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety urge drivers to make a plan leading up to the Labor Day holiday,  a plan for a safe and sober ride home.

Fish-fry planned for Labor Day Weekend

The annual Labor Day Weekend fish-fry and kick-off for the annual United Way of Franklin County pledge drive has been set for Saturday, September 3 from 5 to 7 p.m at the Masonic Lodge in Mount Vernon on the south service road of I-30.

Call out to those available to help with U.S. flag detail

The Labor Day weekend is just a few days away; so, it is time for the community U.S. Flag Detail to organize. Anyone able to participate in the posting of the flags, is asked be at the square about 7 a.m. on Friday, and the same time again on Tuesday to retrieve the flags.

Mission Manor Healthcare Residence will be the host for a Carter Blood Care blood drive on Wednesday, August 31 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the nursing home at 501 Yates St.
