I-pad use to kickoff fall computer series

Registration is open for a six week series of  beginner level computing classes that will be offered at the Franklin County Library this fall. The classes will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13 and 20, and Oct. 4 through 25.

Ark-Tex Council of Governments is notifying business owners about Kari’s Law requiring owners of multi-line telephone systems (MLTS) in Texas to provide direct-dial access to 9-1-1 without having to dial an additional digit such as 9 first before getting an outside line.

Tornado victims plan picnic for those who provided help

The Gage, Smith and Douglas families will be hosts for a celebration from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 10 to show their appreciation for those who helped their families after the tornado in December 2015.

Benefit fish-fry Saturday

The United Way of Franklin County will provide an all-you-can-eat catfish dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge on Saturday, September 3 to kick-off the annual pledge drive for the local organization. For more about this event, see the September 1 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.

No-kill animal shelter in planning stages

A group of people are interested in starting a nonprofit animal rescue sanctuary in Franklin County. It would be a no-kill shelter, where animals could be taken for safety and to acquire a new home.

Longer dove hunting season opens

Dove season zones mapTexas dove populations are soaring and the hunting season, which got underway September 1, is the longest in 80 years. The new 90-day season this fall means hunters will have 20 more days of opportunities to hunt compared with previous years.

Call out to those available to help with U.S. flag detail

The Labor Day weekend is just a few days away; so, it is time for the community U.S. Flag Detail to organize. Anyone able to participate in the posting of the flags, is asked be at the square about 7 a.m. on Friday, and the same time again on Tuesday to retrieve the flags.
