Buck named to UT honors

Zachary Buck of Mount Vernon was one of 341 students named to the  President’s Honor Roll at the University of Texas at Tyler. The academic honor is for the 2014 spring semester, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.

Hare earns master degree in counseling

Sarah Anne HareSarah Anne Hare graduated from Lamar University in Beaumont with a master of science degree in School counseling on Saturday, May 17. Ms. Hare maintained a 4.0 grade point average while obtaining the degree.

Greenberg to attend leadership conference

Garrett GreenbergGarrett Greenberg will be attending the National Young Leaders State Conference in Houston from June 12 to 15. She was nominated for this honor by Mount Vernon Intermediate School Counselor Jenene Dale based on her academic performance and the leadership qualities she has exhibited the past two years.

Gilbert DaleGilbert Dale has been selected to at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar at the University of Texas at Arlington campus June 12 to 15.

Sulphur Bluff seniors awarded over $336,000 in scholarships

Senior students at Sulphur Bluff ISD received $336,450 in scholarship money during graduation ceremonies on Saturday, June 7 at the school. See the June 12 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for a listing of students who received scholarships.

Siddens is winner of essay contest

Marcus Siddens, center, was named winner of the March With Me Reflections essay contest. Marcus Siddens was announced as the winner of the  essay contest on the meaning March With Me, a book by Rosalie Turner on the “Children’s March” and other protests on segregation.
