Heritage Scholarship banquet Saturday night

The ninth annual Heritage Scholarship Banquet, honoring the black heritage graduates of the 2016 Mount Vernon High School graduating class and those currently in college, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18.

Camp, McGill receive Rising Lone Star awards

Logan Camp and Mason McGill of Saltillo High School were two of the three students from the Fourth Congressional District of Texas selected to receive the 2016 “Rising Lone Star” award by Rep. John Ratcliffe.

Fowler earns degree

Amanda Gail Fowler of Franklin County was among those to graduate from East Texas Baptist University during Spring Commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 7 in Baker Chapel of the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center.

Dr. Watkins to be speaker at Heritage Scholarship Banquet

Dr. Herbert L. Watkins, M.D.Dr. Herbert L. Watkins, M.D. will be the guest speaker for the ninth annual Heritage Scholarship Banquet, sponsored by the Black Onyx Club, in the Cultural Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 17.

Auringer named to dean’s lists

Zachary Auringer was named to the dean’s list for both the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters at Texas A&M University - Commerce. Honorees must be full time students at the university and maintain a 3.50 grade point average or above.

Velazquez receives scholarship

Jessica VelazquezJessica Velazquez was recently awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship covers up to $40,000 annually at any university of the student’s choice for up to three years to complete a bachelors degree.

Key graduates

Callie Key graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a bachelor of science degree in speech/language pathology. A total of 2,102 students received degrees.

Kindergarten registration open at Salitllo

Registration for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten is open at Saltillo ISD. The process will continue through June 3. For a listing of required documentation for registration, see the June 2 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
