New telephone scam
A new telephone scam has recently been reported. Newspapers in West Texas have received reports that scammers are calling their classified advertising customers, and telling them the newspaper’s computer system crashed.
City grants bed and breakfast exception
A special exception use was granted to Ron Barker to allow use of the house at 515 W. Main St. as a bed and breakfast inn.
Tonic Sol-fa to perform
The Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community College will present the vocal group Tonic Sol-fa on Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Jazz, blues concert set at music hall
Mount Vernon Music Associaton will be the hosts for a concert featuring jazz, blues and love songs. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 28 at The Music Hall.See the March 11 edition of the Optic-Herald for more information.

Members of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, community members, friends and family gathered to support Ronnie and Pamela Barnard as they cut the ribbon while their daughters, Abigail, Alyvia, and Amelya hold the ends.
Stroman is first at Toastmasters contest
Sharon Stroman of Mount Vernon won first place in both the Tall Tales and International Speech categories at the Toastmasters Area 13 Spring Speech Contest.

First place - 3rd and 4th grade girls
Members of David Rain’s third and fourth grade girls team won first place in their division as a part of the 2009-10 Little Dribblers Association season.
Music scholarship announced for 2010

The Mount Vernon High School class of 1970 and 1971 are having a class reunion planning meeting on Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at the Dairy Queen in Mount Vernon.
