Farm Bureau boosts membership

The Franklin County Farm Bureau has been recognized as second in the number of consecutive years of growth in the state. The achievement was announced at the Texas Farm Bureau’s 80th annual convention last weekend, December 7-8, at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter.

Food baskets to be distributed Saturday, December 14

Christmas For All Food Baskets will be distributed to qualified applicants between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, December 14. This year 528 individuals from 224 families are scheduled to receive help through the program.

Deadline Monday for decoration nominations

The deadline for nominating a favorite home or business for their Christmas decorating efforts is 1 p.m. Monday, December 16. Anyone may nominate an entry in either the business or home divisions of the 2013 Christmas Decorating contest, sponsored by the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.

Bales retiring

Claudia BalesA retirement reception for Claudia Bales will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, December 15 in the lobby at the United States Post Office in Talco. Mrs. Bales is retiring from the USPS after 31 years of service. She began as a postal sub in 1982 and became a full time employee in 2006.

Poster contest winners announced

2013 Poster Contest WinnersWinners in the 32nd annual Mount Vernon Elementary School Poster Contest were announced on Thursday, December 5 at the First National Bank of Mount Vernon. Students were instructed to create a poster that illustrates what they believe is an “Old Fashioned Christmas.”

HOME applications now being accepted

The City of Mount Vernon is accepting applications for  the third round of assistance for the replacement of substandard housing. The assistance is in the form of a grant or a deferred forgivable loan.

Sidewalk Ribbon Cutting Monday

A ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the $200,000 Main Street sidewalk project has been scheduled for 11:30 a.m on Monday, December 16. Mayor Margaret Sears will address those attending and hot cider will be available. See the December 12 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more information.

“Christmas Store” in need of clothing

The Christmas Store sponsored by the Communities in School program is still in need of clothing for elementary age students, pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.
