Vendors welcomed for 2nd Saturday

The Second Saturday in downtown Mount Vernon will be a big event for vendors in September. This month’s event will overlap with a built-in crowd and great toe-tapin’ music from the First National Bank’s Fall Picnic around Heritage Fountain.

Cowgirl Chicks, Cooper provide Whizbang good time at rodeo

Drew Watson, dressed in drag, surprised Mr. Cooper, chased him down, and carried him over his shoulder out of the arena.The All American Cowgirl Chicks and funny man Coty “Whizbang” Cooper helped to draw more than 3,000 people during the two night run of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Posse Labor Day Rodeo.

Writers workshop registration open

The Northeast Texas Writers Organization (NETWO) will conduct a workshop for beginning writers on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 3-6 p.m at Pizza Inn, in Pittsburg.

Local supporters honored for $45,000 in contributions

Those receiving plaques were, front row, Frankie Cooper for the Order of the Eastern Star, Mount Vernon ISD employees Marsha Romines and Deanne Sewell, back row, Garry Romines for the First National Bank, John Gholson for Luminant, Jim Alford, Bobby Elbert and Richard Lee for the Masonic Lodge.The United Way of Franklin County, Texas honored businesses and group supporters for their expected contributions of $45,000 in funds during 2014.

United Way Fish-fry Saturday

The United Way of Franklin County will provide an all-you-can-eat catfish dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge Hall on Saturday, August 30.
