American Legion begins holiday food collections

The Mount Vernon American Legion and Auxiliary to Post 243 began their collection of nonperishable food items for the 2016 Christmas For All program Monday, November 7.

Briggs, Elizalde speakers at Veterans Salute Saturday

Two decorated veterans, E. Ridley Briggs, an Air Force fighter pilot, and Sgt. Maj. Sam Elizalde, U.S. Marine Corps - Retired, will be the featured speakers for the sixth annual community wide Veterans Salute program.

Community election watch set

A community election watch has been set for Tuesday, November 8 at the Franklin County Airport Community Hall. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and free stew will be served.

Rotarian of the Year 2015-16 awarded Smith posthumously

Virginia Smith accepts the posthumous Rotarian of the Year award for her husband, GeneThomas Eugene Smith was named the Mount Vernon Rotary Club’s Rotarian of the Year for 2015-16 during the club’s annual Rotary Scholarship Banquet Saturday evening, November 5.

City, chamber finalize agreement for operation of ice skate rink

The myriad of details that will allow the operation of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce’s synthetic ice skating rink to operate in the downtown public venue were finalized at last week’s meeting of the Mount Vernon City Council with the approval and signing of the agreement between the city and chamber.

Sixth annual Veterans Appreciation program set
