Holiday on Ice Rink opens Friday

Grand Opening ceremonies for the Mount Vernon Holiday on Ice Skating Rink sponsored by the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce will be Friday, November 15 at 5:30 p.m.

Veterans marker dedication well attended, inspiring

Participants in the Stouts Creek Cemetery verterans service marker dedicationThe dedication of a veterans service marker at the Stouts Creek Cemetery near Saltillo attracted a crowd of approximately 150 Saturday, November 9. The ice rink will open for skaters on Friday, November 15.

Shiels honored as top lawyer

Veteran’s programs Monday

Members of the Mount Vernon High School Student Council will be hosts for a Veteran’s Day Program on Monday, November 11 at the school. The Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 3992 will have a hot dog lunch for veterans at noon on Monday, November 11. For more information, see the November 7 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.

Allen retires from service to county

Randy Allen, left, surprised his dad, Gerry Allen, when he showed up at a retirement celebration on Saturday, Nov. 2. The elder Mr. Allen did not think his son would be able to attend.Gerry Allen retired as Fire Marshall, Emergency Management Coordinator, and On-Site Septic Inspector in Franklin County effective November 1. Mr. Allen has served Franklin County for the past 20 years.

Motivational scholarship cost rising

With more than $36,000 expended for scholarships in 2012 alone, the Mount Vernon Rotary Club is hoping for exceptional community support for its scholarship fund raising dinner next week.

American Legion, Auxiliary begin holiday food collections

The Mount Vernon American Legion and Auxiliary to Post 243 will begin their collection of nonperishable food items for the 2013 Christmas For All program this week.
