Over 6,025 clients served in 2016

The Community Food Bank of Franklin County served 6,025 clients in 2016 with a total of  188,000 pounds of food distributed to 486 individuals helped monthly, plus another 192 Christmas baskets provided.

Senior housing project tabled

Presentations from StoneLeaf Companies of preliminary plans to construct an affordable apartment development for senior citizens were met with cautious optimism by both the Franklin County Commissioners Court and the Mount Vernon City Council at their meetings Monday.

Special utility district election canceled

The Cypress Springs Special Utility District Board of Directors canceled its regular first Saturday of February election and certified four unopposed candidates that were scheduled to be on the ballot. For more information, see the January 12 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.

Franklin County Tax Assessor / Collector Sue Ann Harper wants to make sure county residents know 13 days remain to pay their property taxes without additional penalties.

Coach Meeks seeks new heart

Dickey Meeks is seeking a new heart. He is considered a Level 1A heart transplant recipient, the highest rating level. He checked into Baylor Heart Hospital in Dallas December 27.
