Crafts booths available at wine event

Area artists and craftsmen are invited to reserve a booth for the Wine in the Pines event in Mount Vernon Friday night and Saturday, October 25 and 26. This is the fourth year for the event featuring Texas wineries and vineyards.

Jordan, Romines take top honors in stew competition

CountryFest Stew Cookoff WinnersA total of 13 cooking teams competed in the 29th annual CountryFest Stew Cook Off Contest. The auction of the winning stews earned $1,950 for the sponsoring Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.

Back pack numbers skyrocket; donations needed for program

The number of children in the Mount Vernon School system requesting meals for weekends has more than tripled since last year, according to Marie Latortue, coordinator for the Mount Vernon Rotary Back pack program.

Car show sets record for participation

Car show winners display awards The 2013 CountryFest Auto Show attracted a total of 53 cars, trucks, and motorcycles. That number is one greater than the previous record for entrants in the annual show.

Annual Franklin County Hay Show raises $7,335

Winners were, front row, William Kirby, Shanna Cornell, back row, Peter Boekhorst, Hendrik Talsma, and Arne Van Dieden.The 2013 annual Mount Vernon Saltillo Young Farmer Hay Show raised $7,335 to be used on improvements to the pavilion located on FM 115 in Mount Vernon and for scholarships.

Library to celebrate 100 year-old building

The Franklin County Library will mark the 100th year of its building during CountryFest on Saturday, October 12.
