The City of Mount Vernon’s council members joined with other small communities across east Texas to deny the Southwestern Electric Power Company’s (SWEPCO) application for the authority to change rates requiring the reimbursement of municipal rate case expenses and increase base utility rates approximately 24 percent as filed with the Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) in mid-December 2016.
The increase to residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt hours each month would result in a 34 percent increase in electric costs. See the April 13 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more about this topic and other agenda items from the April 10 meeting.
