Million Word Challenge finishes strong

Million Word Challenge reading contest at Mount Vernon Intermediate School participantsThe Million Word Challenge reading contest at Mount Vernon Intermediate School ended on March 3. Over the course of the five week contest, students were challenged to read one million words in Accelerated Reader books.

Open Forum for school’s bond election planned

Mount Vernon ISD has scheduled an Open Forum concerning the Special Bond Election for Monday, March 31 at 6 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. The public is invited to learn more about the $14 million bond proposal. See the March 20 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more information.

Mount Vernon Destination Imagination teams compete at regional event

Third and Fourth grade DI teamTwo Mount Vernon Elementary School Destination Imagination teams competed at the regional event in Mesquite recently. One team finished in sixth place, and the other claimed 10th.

Board approves dual language program

Members of the Mount Vernon ISD Board of Trustees approved becoming the first district in Region VIII to offer a Dual Language Two Way program. The district is currently using the One Way model, teaching students who are English language learners to be proficient in both English and Spanish.

Donald, Newby named Employees of the Year

MVISD employees honored at the school’s annual banquetDanielle Donald was named the Teacher of the Year and Samantha Newby was named Auxillary Employee of the Year at Mount Vernon ISD’s annual Employee Awards Banquet Tuesday, March 4.

2014 Nominations sought for School League of Honor

Mount Vernon ISD is accepting nominations for the 2014 Franklin County Schools League of Honor. To date, no nominations have been received. As many as four students and two employees can be selected each year.

Mount Vernon fifth and sixth grade Destination Imagination group named Bonus Team

 fifth and sixth grade Destination Imagination teamThe independent fifth and sixth grade Destination Imagination team earned a third place finish out of 21 teams at the regional event. The Mount Vernon group was picked as the Bonus Team and will advance to state.
