Florene Burkham, was born in Mount Vernon, Texas on December 28, 1917 and passed away on November 13, 2013.
She spent her early years in Mount Vernon, TX graduated from Mount Vernon High School and married Frank Shewmaker. They moved to San Perlita, Texas, began farming, and started a family. They had a daughter, Veda Gaye Shewmaker, and a son, Gary Frank Shewmaker who was killed in an accident while he was in high school.
Florene endured several tragedies during her lifetime including the deaths of her son and three husbands. She prevailed over these misfortunes, and continued to live a positive fruitful life. She devoted her life to care for her family and three grandchildren. She was a gentle person who found fault with no one and thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren. While their father was gone to Vietnam, the grandsons and her daughter lived with her. Mrs. Burkham tolerated the antics of the young boys and she thought they could do no wrong. Everyone who knew Mrs. Burkham benefited from her friendship.
Florene Burkham is survived by her daughter, Veda Gaye Ellington, three grandsons, Jerald W. Ellington II, Jordan L. Ellington, James T. Ellington, and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Sunday afternoon until time of service on Tuesday, November 19, at 2:00 p.m. at Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel, 604 W. Hidalgo, Raymondville, Tx, followed by internment at the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery.
