Kenneth Boyd Young, age 81, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Winfield, passed away in the early afternoon hours of Sunday, May 18, 2014 at East Texas Medical Center in Mount Vernon.
Kenneth was born on September 20, 1932, also his father’s 44th birthday, in Leonard, Texas to the late Vester A. and Florence Myrtle Bailey Young. He graduated from Bonham High School in 1950 and went on to serve his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Kenneth married his beloved wife Ruby Lee Martin in San Francisco, California on December 5, 1954. Together they spent the next 60 years raising a family and living a lifetime of memories; she survives. Kenneth retired from Grocery Supply Company in Sulphur Springs in 1990.
Kenneth served on the Winfield School Board and in the Winfield Lions Club. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Winfield. Those who knew Kenneth will remember him for the love he had for his family. He always thought of his children as his “millions of dollars”--- until his grandchildren were born. Kenneth was always his children’s and grandchildren’s “number one fan”, whether it be basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, or musical concerts; they were his “number one priority” and once he even painted a sign saying so.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Ruby, of Mount Vernon; children, Retired Lt. Col. Kenneth Wayne Young, and wife Karen, of Edmond, OK, Beverley Joyce Nelson Phillips of Mount Vernon, and Sharon Marie Young Mars of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Sara Young Chown and husband Ben, Jay Nelson and wife Jamie, Michael Young and wife Carolyn, Kylie Nelson Collier and husband Jeremy, and Zachry Mars; great-grandchildren, Austin Chown and Emma Chown; sister, Willie Mae Young Evans; brother-in-law, Fred Todd; sister-in-law and husband, Bernice and Sam Jacobs; sister-in-law, Martha Martin Price; and by a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members and very special friends.
Kenneth was preceded in death by one son, Seldon Glen Young; brothers, Leon Young, Elmer Young, Benton Young, Horace Young, IZ Young, and Morris Young; and sister, Lucille Walker.
Funeral services for Kenneth Boyd Young were at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon with Pastor Dominic Crescimanno officiating. A military graveside followed at Winfield Cemetery with The Silent Knights serving as pallbearers.
