John Richard “J.R.” Nugent, age 83, of Sulphur Bluff, died Friday, June 6, 2014 at Sunny Springs Nursing Home in Sulphur Springs.
He was born on March 22, 1931, in Shreveport, LA, to the late John David and Mirie McElwee Nugent. J. R. graduated from Fair Park High School, Shreveport, in 1949, and attended Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA. He married Mary George Stone on July 5, 1953.
J.R. was a structural engineer for E. L. Burns Co. in Shreveport, and later became the national sales representative for the Burns Co. He retired as a Captain from the Louisiana National Guard after serving twenty years. He and Mary George moved to Texas in 1976 and became ranchers in the Sulphur Bluff community. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. He is survived by his wife, Mary George; daughter, Georgia Ransone; sons, David William Nugent and Carl Richard Nugent; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Marisa, Jared, John, Josh, Carla, and Morgan; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, June 9, 2014 at the funeral home with Bro. Pepper Puryear officiating and Dave Hickerson assisting. Music was provided by Gary and Marsha Romines. Serving as pallbearers were Jim Barnes, Glen Zachary, Jim Collett, Nat Paul Gibbs, Ken Swinford, and Paul Fletcher. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Jack Henry Class and the Tabitha Class of First Baptist Church, Selah Inn Bible Study and the Sulphur Bluff Methodist Ladies Bingo. Following the funeral, burial was held at Centuries Memorial Park in Shreveport, Louisiana.
