LaVerne Hicks Roy was born September 5, 1930 in Handley, Texas. Her parents were Lon W. Hicks and Nettie Raymond Hicks.
Despite losing both parents and a beloved brother during her childhood, she always described those Depression-era years as “very happy.” She was married to David H. Kennington of Dallas from 1948 to 1959.
In 1960 she married Guy Roy, originally from Floydada, Texas, and they made their home for many years in Dallas, where LaVerne owned and operated the InsideOut patio furniture stores. She had many friends and enjoyed playing bridge and traveling.
In 1995 LaVerne and Guy retired and moved to their beautiful home on Lake Cypress Springs in Mt. Vernon, Texas where LaVerne was active in the community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Vernon and participated in the church’s Stephen Ministry. She also enjoyed her membership in the Shakespeare Society and the Mt. Vernon Historical Society. Once again, her friends were the joy of her life.
After Guy’s death in 2010, LaVerne’s health began to decline rapidly. She passed away August 15, 2011.
LaVerne is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Larry Dalton of San Antonio; her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Shawn Kennington of Dallas; and her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Debbie Roy of Mt. Vernon. Grandchildren are Elisabeth Collier, Michael Dalton, Emily Dalton, Sarah Dalton, Chad Kennington, Stephen Dalton, Christine Roy, and Alexandra Kennington; great-grandchildren are Grace, Anna, and Dalton Collier.
Donations in her honor may be made to the Mt.Vernon Shakespeare Society scholarship fund or to the
Stephen Ministry of the First United Methodist Church
