Rail port controversy, dam settlement, and changes at MVISD are top headlines in 2018

The top story from the pages of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for 2018 was the dissension between the City and County concerning a proposed rail port.

Other headline makers included an out-of-court settlement by the Franklin County Water District on the sluffing of materials on the dam at Lake Cypress Springs and the hiring of a new superintendent at Mount Vernon ISD. Eight new businesses opened their doors with ribbon cuttings during 2018. During the year, there was also reported one homicide, two missing persons, six large structure fires, and one fatal accident.
